About
To be able to create you first have to learn skills no matter what it is. I initially trained in telecommunications electronics and was very good at it, so much so that I was put in charge of the West End of London responsible for 200 engineers. I loved the job. I then moved to Derbyshire as a troubleshooter for the Midlands and the North.
It was here that I first started pottery when I went to an adult education class and I got hooked, especially with the throwing. After 2 terms I took the life changing decision to sign up to a vocational pottery course at Chesterfield College of Art. It gave me the time to learn the basics of making and firing pottery. I will admit I was not an easy student being the age of 33. I finished the course early having completed 2 of the 3 years.
I found myself a workshop with a retail shop and a place to build a kiln. Then started my big adventure which is a story for another time maybe. What this is really about is that along the way you may have to acquire additional skills and be prepared to adapt and never stop learning. As an art teacher once said to me, everything you do you should approach as producing a masterpiece. On the whole I can do it. Sometimes there are happy accidents which are bonuses, but if it does not work out as you would want then you can’t do it. So you must learn how to achieve what you want.
